Parent FAQ

Hello Parents! We are so excited and proud to have your daughters become our sisters. We know you have questions, so we're here to answer the most frequently asked ones!

Will my daughter's grades fall because she joined a sorority?
Absolutely not! Our Vice President of Academic Excellence is always working hard to ensure that the sisters of our chapter are continuing to do well academically. If they start to struggle or need help, our VPAE will ensure that they get the help they need and get back on track! Sigma Kappa strives for academic excellence, and sisters must maintain at least a 2.6 GPA in order to be participate in social activities with the chapter!

Will my daughter be taken care of and safe?
Safety is our main priority at all times. We do everything we can to make sure that your daughter is feeling taken care of, comfortable, and safe at all times. We want to be their home away from home! There are Risk Management polices in place for any and all of our events, in case of an emergency. All chapter members are educated on this process prior to initiation. Our chapter President and Vice President of Standards of Values are responsible for Risk Management at all times.

I've heard the horror stories about members being hazed... will that happen to my daughter?
NO! The Gamma Upsilon chapter of Sigma Kappa is strongly against hazing, taking every step possible to prevent any and all hazing. Hazing is defined as any act used to humiliate, harm, or embarrass another person, and all we could ever want for your daughter is the utmost respect and love. Our chapter takes hazing very seriously, no matter how subtle, and are consistently checking in with our members to verify that they are not experience any act that may be in question of hazing. If you have any other questions or concerns about hazing, please visit our Chapter Officers tab, where our Vice President of Standards and Values would be happy to speak with you.

It costs money to be in a sorority... I don't know if I or my daughter can afford it.
While it does cost money to be a part of this organization, or any greek organization, it does not have to break the bank! We have various payment plan options so that it is affordable for anyone and will ease any financial burden. Our Vice President of Finance is constantly working with sisters to accommodate their personal needs.

What are the benefits of being in Sigma Kappa?
Not only does it build life long friendships, but it teaches your daughter so many important lessons and values. There are plenty of leadership opportunities as well as service opportunities. All of our sisters are required to give back to not only to our National Philanthropies, but to our surrounding community as well. Being in Sigma Kappa is also a huge benefit when it comes to getting a job. Having it on a resume is a great way to stand out in an interview, and because Sigma Kappa is a national organization, you never know when you may meet another Sigma Kappa who is willing to help. The sisterhood of Sigma Kappa will also give your daughter a strong support system away from home, where she will receive a Big Sister to guide her throughout college life. There will never be a moment where she feels alone in Sigma Kappa!
